Retapamulin - a new treatment of impetigo in children
Retapamulin offers an alternative treatment of impetigo in children.
Retapamulin inhibits protein synthesis through an interaction with the ribosome.
The drug is indicated for use twice daily for a 5-day period and can be used in treatment of impetigo in patients aged 9 months or older.
Retapamulin was approved on the basis of effectiveness data from a placebo-controlled study comparing it with another antibiotic.
Impetigo is a contagious skin infection that usually produces blisters or sores on the face and hands. It is one of the most common skin infections among kids. It is generally caused by one of two bacteria: group A streptococcus or staphylococcus aureus.
