Polymorphic Eruptions in Pregnancy Linked to Male Fetuses

Pruritic papules that develop on the lower abdomen during late pregnancy, mainly occurred during the third trimester, are significantly associated with an increased risk of cesarean section and with a male fetus, French researchers report in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Women in the PEP group were significantly more likely to have a male fetus (64.5%) and cesarean section delivery (40%) compared with controls, at 48.4% and 13.1%, respectively. Non-progression of labor and breech presentation were the two most frequent reasons for cesarean.

The risk of PEP was not related to excessive maternal or fetal weight gain.
These results come from a retrospective case-control study of 200 pregnant women, 40 of whom had polymorphic eruption of pregnancy (PEP) and 160 who served as controls.
