Uutiset: Attitudes and knowledge about tanning and behaviour

This article deals with young adults and their attitudes towards tanning and the influence that physicians have regarding tanning behaviour.

A random-digit-dialled telephone interview investigated 100 young beachgoers' knowledge of malignant melanoma and tanning in the summers of 1988, 1994 and 2007.
The study focused among other things on the general attitudes towards tanning and knowledge of relevant information sources. Indoor tanning was registered from 1988 - 2007.

The study showed that knowledge regarding limitations of tanning to help prevent melanoma increased from 1988 (25%) to 1994% (77%), but decreased again from 1994 to 2007 (67%). This decrease took place during the same period as attitudes that a tan is physically attractive (1994, 69%, 2007, 81%) increased. The use of sun booths increased from 1988 to 1994 and has remained unchanged since then.

Only 14 % of all participants in the study reported having consulted their physician regarding information about the risks of tanning. There is a clear need of physicians to influence tanning behaviour and to eduated young adults about possible risks.
